Gaiole in Chianti
Gaiole in Chianti is located between Florence and Siena in central Toscana. Since 1932 it has been the center of the Chianti Classico zone. Pretty much every major Chianti producer is located within an hour of the town and they also hold the Chianti Festival every September. I shouldn’t have to explain how beautiful the areas around the town are as most people dream about living there.
There are a few types of people who have opinions on Chianti. The classics are the ones that remember the straw wrapped bottles and not so solid wines. The new ones have enjoyed the wines as they changed with the advent of “Super Tuscans”. Many winemakers in the 70’s split from the DOCG and started producing new world style wines to sell outside of Italy, specifically to the United States. Today, Chianti quality has peaked and rivals any other wine made. But, as always, know who is selling to you as the levels of quality are vast. Just having the Gallo Nero sticker is no guarantee.
The last rule is to drink the wines in Toscana itself as everything will always taste more lush and beautiful. As my old friend used to say, “Like sunshine through the Tuscan pines”.
