STAFF PICKS

BACK TO SCHOOL
by Sarah Lagrotteria

When see the neighborhood children breaking in their new backpacks and sneakers, those of us at Babbo still feel that twinge of back-to-school excitement at summer’s end. Why let the kids have all the fun? There are plenty of places right here in the neighborhood that help us continue to expand our minds and add a little more play to our lives. The best part is, these classes are intended to offer adults only the joys-new knowledge, new friends, a new pattern to our day- and none of the stress of our old school days.

Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village
240 Bleeker Street
New York, NY 10014 Tel:212-229-1361
http://www.scuolaitaliana.org/

Scuola Italian prides itself on providing its students with a “slice” of Italy- exploring daily Italian life, cultural practices, and (our favorite) gastronomic history and traditions. What we really love is the fact that class size is limited so that all students have a true opportunity for personal attention from one of the native Italian teachers. Classes are offered at all levels and at various times, so there are no excuses for not knowing your pesca from your pesce.

Wine Seminars at Otto Enoteca Pizzeria
1 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY 10003

www.ottopizzeria.com

Beginning in late September, Otto will begin offering wine seminars on specified Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. Led by various members of the Otto staff, including Mario Batali, Joe Bastianich, and Babbo alum and current Otto beverage director Morgan Rich, each seminar will focus on the wines of one region and include tastings, histories, facts, and personal vignettes from Otto’s wine experts. Times TBA.

Gotham Writer’s Workshop
www.writers.com

We’ve all seen the flyers in the little corner booths advertising the Gotham Writer’s Workshops. What you may not know is that the classes range from in focus from screenplays, poetry, novels and memoir. In addition, classes and lectures can be taken on-line, perfect for those New Yorkers who don’t feel they have a minute to spare. Times and locations vary.

The New School University Continuing Education Program
www.newschool.edu

Starting each September, the New School offers a slew of new continuing education classes. Our favorites are offered in the visual arts department, with such winners as Beginning Drawing and Beginning Painting for those of us with “little or no experience.” There are also tons of body movement and dance classes, including “How to Stand up Straight.”
