HOLIDAY PIES
by Caroline Jackson

Pumpkin, Pecan, Mince, and Apple, just a few pie favorites Americans feast on each holiday season. No Thanksgiving meal would be a celebration of our American heritage without a sampling of the bounty of these fruits, nuts, and squash. In and around the city you will find many bakeries serve up pie as simple and true as the one your mother makes. However, we suggest this year you serve it with crema di mascarpone.

Rocco Pastry

243 Bleecker Street
An old school Italian bakery that couldn't be more New York. You won't find yourself alone at the counter come the holidays. The system for ordering is simple and expeditious. This year's flavors include Pumpkin, Pecan, Mince, Cherry, Lemon and Coconut Custard.

Magnolia Bakery

401 Bleecker Street
Who hasn't feasted on a cupcake or two on a lazy evening walk around the West Village at the Magnolia bakery? Do you find yourself looking for quality American pies whose crust stands up to the test of some of the toughest critics. The Magnolia Bakery offers simple and perfectly executed pies including Pumpkin and Pecan. For the more discerning critics they serve Apple Crumb and Apple Crisp, each different in texture, but equally tart and delicious.

Bruno Bakery

506 LaGuardia Place
If you prefer a slightly more refined texture and a less crisco more paper thin butter-rich crust, Bruno offers those American favorites with a more European flare. As with the others, Pumpkin, Pecan, and Apple can be found here. Though Key Lime and Lemon are not traditional at this time of year, the soufflé texture of both of these, might be worth the feeling of a trip down to the sunny coast of Florida.
