SOUP STOPS
by Sarah Lagrotteria

During those days when the wind is still blowing cold, the sky is grey, and the ground is grayer, there’s nothing better than a hot bowl of soup to lift your spirits. Here, the Babbo staff shares their favorite soup spots for a quick lunchtime get-away.

Pearl Oyster Bar

18 Cornelia St.
For those days when you can’t be tucked away in a New England beach town-Rebecca Charles’s juicy, thick clam chowder is the ultimate midwinter escape. With a dark, cold beer and a crusty roll, this meal is as satisfying as can be. The intimate storefront restaurant, located on charming Cornelia Street, is a perennial fave amongst Babbo staff present and past.

The Grey Dog’s Coffee

33 Carmine Street
If only they would deliver as far away as Babbo! This slightly ramshackle, colorful café evokes instant nostalgia-right down to your Green Peace t-shirted waiter, it’s just like your fave college café of old. But this soup is much better than what you remember. On a recent visit, we had the choice of New England clam chowder, winter veggie stew, steak chili, or tomato, chicken and artichoke soup.

Cafe Aséan

117 W 10th St Fl 1
The phone number for this Malaysian fusion restaurant is practically on the Babbo speed dial. It’s where we call first when looking for a quick fix. A blend of Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai foodstuffs spice up the menu, but we’re consistently drawn to the seafood noodle soup. With choice bits of seafood, and perfectly-cooked noodles floating in a hot, rich, seafood broth, this is delivery (though the restaurant itself is also great) at its very best.

Cozy Soup & Burger

739 Broadway at Astor Place
So yes, it looks just like any old diner. And yes, many of the dishes taste of nothing but late-night roadside stops, but the homemade soups at Cozy rise far above standard diner fare. Cozy offers plenty of choices, including Greek lemon soup, chunky minestrone, and the thick and vegetal split pea puree, each day. It’s as fast as can be, the soups are stunningly fresh, and the service is super-friendly. What more can you want on a dreary winter day?
